Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
